Belgium, the Netherlands
Sand mining industry in Flanders

The tool is specifically designed to estimate the impact of quarry management on ecosystem services and biodiversity. Ecosystem services are the contribution of ecosystems to human wellbeing. The classification and definition of ecosystem services is based on scientific research performed for the European Commission and the United Nations. The concept helps to be aware of the potential impact of sustainable quarry management on ecosystems and on society. The tool includes different types of management variables or decicions that quarry management can take, to increase the delivery of ecosystem services and to improve biodiversity.

The tool allows to assess the impact on a qualitative bases (score 1 to 5) for a whole range of services. For a limited set, methodologies are included to perform a quantitative valuation in biophysical terms, or a monetary valuation.
