Evaluate the potential risks of pollution caused by mining activities or resulting from waste disposal or tailings
Environmental impact assessments (EIA) are necessary to evaluate the potential risks of pollution caused by mining activities or resulting from waste disposal or tailings. Monitoring and numerical modelling are essential to allow expert judgement.
Environmental impact assessments is not only needed during mining activities or after closing down but also before the mine is starting its operation. This was often not done in the past, but essential in defining a reference situation. Assessments are carried out based on historical data, recent measurements and models. It is useful to apply (or make) early warning systems to allow fast respons and impact assessment.
